Social media can be an important piece to a communication plan. According to Solis and Breakenridge (2009), "As part of the New Media regime, strategically participating in Social Media is not only critical to the evolution of PR, but it’s also essay to effectively communicate with the people which can help extend the conversations that impact your business" (p. 165). The use of social media is continuing to grow because it allows people to share, create or exchange different ideas, information, pictures, and videos in communities and networks. "Simply put, Social Media comprises the tools for people to create, share, and publish content online" (Solis & Breakenbridge, 2009, p. 31). Three popular Social Media networks used especially in the college environment are Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Twitter is social messaging with the ability to follow people and have followers. People who tweet are only allowed to post messages shorter than 140 characters. Facebook is a social media network that allows registered users to create profiles, upload videos and pictures, and send messages to stay in touch with family, friends, and colleagues. Lastly, Instagram is a social networking app made for photo-sharing and video-sharing on a smartphone.
